Government must continue closing shocking UK inequality gap
21.10.08
Commenting on the OECD report ‘Growing Unequal? Income Distribution and Poverty in OECD Countries’, the Chief Executive of Child Poverty Action Group, Kate Green, said:
“It is shocking to see how much worse Britain is for inequality and social mobility than other wealthy countries. The good news is, thanks to a government focus on ending child poverty, things have started getting better.
“The report shows government action on poverty needs to be maintained for progress to continue. The financial crisis means efforts must now be stepped up with a rescue package in the Pre-Budget Report to keep poor families afloat.
“Low social mobility is a consequence of high levels of inequality. If we continue to make progress closing the gap between the richest and poorest, we will see much greater social mobility for today’s children.”
