WELFARE TO WORK  

In-work benefits for lone parents and disabled people

People considering starting work need clear advice on the possible effect on benefit and tax credit entitlement. This course considers entitlement in both part-time and full-time work for lone parents and those with a disability.

It includes:

  • How benefits and tax credits are affected by starting work
  • Better-off issues between working part time and full time
  • Help with childcare and costs such as school meals and health costs
  • Benefit run-ons at the start of a job
  • Part-time ‘permitted work’ for those on certain benefit
  • Temporary work and how linking rules help with reclaiming benefit

This course is aimed at advisers with a basic knowledge of the benefit and tax credit system.

Jobseeker’s allowance – jobseeking conditions

Many people, particularly lone parents and people with health conditions, must now rely on jobseeker’s allowance (JSA) but need to restrict their availability for work. This course outlines JSA entitlement including jobseeking conditions and considers what flexibility there is for different groups.

The course includes:

  • Basic rules of entitlement
  • Rights of those who are disabled or carers
  • Changes for lone parents – when they must be available for work
  • Sanctions and hardship payments
  • Interviews and the link with the Work Programme
  • Future changes
